Announcing its 1992 summer season yesterday, Pennsylvania Centre Stage revealed a series full of American insights and student talent.
The season will begin with Brighton Beach Memoirs, Neil Simon's play about the Jerome family, a Brooklyn family with an uncertain future living in 1937. The show runs June 17 through July 4 at the Pavilion Theatre.
Jeff Skowron (freshman-labor relations and theater) plays the main character, Eugene Jerome.
"I was really surprised because I thought they were going to cast it in New York," Skowron said.
George M! will run July 1-8 at the Playhouse. It tells the story of legendary Broadway showman George M. Cohen with patriotic songs. Students Michael Buchanan (junior-English) and Debbie Damp (senior-theater) are involved in this sing-and-dance show.
The winner of three Tony awards, Ain't Misbehavin' is a musical with lots of "Fats" Waller influence. The music includes the blues, jazz and swing styles for which Waller is famous. It plays in the Pavilion July 15 through Aug. 1.
Finally, Yankee Doodle is a children's show that educates and entertains, telling the tales of America's heroes.
The shows are interwoven with an American thread.
"We wanted to in some way connect with the Columbus anniversary," said Carole Brandt, artistic director of Centre Stage.
Brighton Beach Memoirs reflects the Jewish-American, George M! the Irish-American and Ain't Misbehaving the African-American experiences, Brandt said..
"Altogether we thought it was a very representative group," Brandt said.
Subscriptions and single tickets are available from Eisenhower Ticket Center and Schwab Box Office.
