Letter to the Editor
Not a joking matter
Dave Hollingsworth, I understand that your editorial which appeared in the Collegian on March 6 was meant to be a joke commenting on several of the common misunderstandings which exist at Penn State. I do, however, feel that you have an obligation to yourself and to your readers to be informed about the seriousness of the issues you address and jokingly criticize. One issue, which was recently brought to my attention, is that of the HUB lawn sculpture which you referred to as the "Fightin' Red Onionhead." This "practical joke" sculpture is, in actuality, an artist's representation of war. If you had done any research on the subject, you would realize that this work combines both the images of a Spanish Loyalist soldier at the moment of his death and the image of a Holocaust train car carrying Jews towards the Nazi concentration camps. As I am sure you would agree, neither of these images invokes much humor. In writing this letter, I would just hope that you would strive to obtain a greater insight about the issues you choose to address in the future.
