Top divers head to Minnesota

Collegian Sports Writers

Coaches Peter Brown and Bob Krimmel, take a well-deserved break. It's time for diving Coach Craig Brown and his charges to strut their stuff.

Brown, along with divers Chris Devine, Amy Schmidt, Ryan Smith, Tara Stevens and Mike Westwood, will make the trip out to Minnesota next Wednesday for the NCAA Diving Pre-qualifying Meet, March 13-14.

"(Penn State) is probably the cleanest group of divers that's going to be at the meet," Brown said.

Brown said the divers have been hard at work since coming off their performances at their respective Big Ten Championships.

"We've been trying to get more consistent on our starts and finishes," he said. He said the divers have been working on "making sure they know where they are when they're spinning, making sure their spots are good and just making sure they're getting in the water cleanly."

In the women's competition, the winner on each board will qualify for NCAAs, along with the diver with the highest total combined score from both 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

"If I go in (to the meet) and have the best meet of my season and I still don't qualify I'll still be happy," Schmidt said. "I'm looking forward to diving well in the meet more than focusing on qualifying."

Stevens, on the other hand, is somewhat more apprehensive.

"This is my first time, so I don't know what to expect," she said. "They only take three people, so it's going to be kind of tough. It depends on if I have a good meet or not. "

"Tara (has) settled down an awful lot," Brown said. "The only time she gets nervous is when she gets around 20 people who are real good. It's just a matter of experience -- she needs to be in that setting more than she has."

The men have a extra opportunity to qualify for NCAAs, as the winners on each board will qualify, as well as the two divers with the highest combined score. Devine and Westwood will be competing on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board, while Smith will only compete in the 1-meter event.

Smith, like Stevens, is making his first trip to this meet, but he probably won't feel as much pressure as would many in his situation.

"Ryan's a real good competitor," Brown said. "He's the kind of kid that gets better around better people. He has a 'nothing to lose' mentality."

Devine and Westwood, however, have been through this before, and are quite familiar with this level of competition. They believe that if they're at their best, things should fall nicely into place.

"The people who we're going against are people we can both beat," Westwood said. "The three of us have a advantage over some of the other divers in that we're all fairly good on both boards."

"We're not intimidated by anybody," Brown said. "It's just a matter of going in there and taking care of busines."
