Collegiate kindness

I am writing to express my gratitude to a very selfless young man who showed that Penn State students have a kind and generous spirit.

On Friday, Feb. 28, my husband and son were helping me exit from Rec Hall after the women's gymnastics meet. We had left the meet a couple of minutes early so that I could avoid the traffic. I am disabled and use a wheelchair. It was raining hard when we came out, and we had not brought an umbrella. My husband had to leave me sitting in my wheelchair while he went to get the car, and I was getting very wet.

When the people began to file out, a kind young college man came towards me carrying a huge golf umbrella. He walked over to my chair and held the umbrella over me, so that I wouldn't get wet. We began to chat for about a minute when my husband pulled up in the van. We both thanked the young man for his kindness, and he wished us a safe trip, said goodbye, and was gone.

I write this in the hopes that this particular young man will read it and know how thankful I am to him for his kindness to me. I never got a chance to ask him his name, but I want to let him know that his consideration and help did not go unnoticed. It is people like him that make the world a happier place for everyone.
