Letter to the Editor
Bike ban bothersome
This letter is in reply to the idiotic policies still in effect on this campus. This particular policy deals with the Penn State police and their infinite wisdom to control bicycle theft. The policy states that no bike shall be allowed inside any building on campus. The situation was this: it was about 11:30 one Tuesday evening and I was studying in the Willard Buiding. While engrossed in a math problem, a janitor informed me that I had to lock my bike outside on the "high security" bike rack. When I stated that my particular bike was very expensive and I did not want to leave it outside, he informed me that he would call campus police services. About 15 minutes later, the police showed up and the officer told me that if my bike and I were not out of the building, he would give me a ticket of an amount that was not disclosed. When I proceeded to argue with this "officer" about theft and how I did not want my bike to star in the next day's police log, he proceeded to escort me out the door. I do not understand what terrible crime I committed by keeping my bike in the corner of a room in which I alone was studying. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the police there to stop theft of personal property, not to condone such an activity?
