'Hi-Lo' harmony
Male singing group prepared for this afternoon's concert

Collegian Arts Writer

For those of you who enjoy music with your lunch, or even if you just enjoy music, it would be wise to become acquainted with the golden voices of the Hi-Lo's.

The Hi-Lo's, a group of 12 singers from the Glee Club, will perform at 12:10 p.m. today in Eisenhower Chapel. The 20-minute concert is part of the Bach's Lunch Series sponsored by the School of Music and the University Lutheran Parish.

Bruce Trinkley, director of the Hi-Lo's and the Glee Club and an associate professor of music, said the group performs a free concert each semester. The lunchtime concert will feature a variety of music, Trinkley said.

"The group will perform a wide range of music, from ballads to show tunes. It will be extremely entertaining and it's a great way to spend a lunch break," said Chuck Grover, Hi-Lo's member and Glee Club vice president.

The group's repertoire includes: "Tutti venite armati" by Giovanni Gastoldi; "Discord, Dire Sister" by Samuel Webbe; "Rustics and Fishermen" from Benjamin Britten's Gloriana; the English folk song "Greensleeves;" a Cole Porter Medley; the Trinkley-arranged "The Sweetest Story Ever Told;" a spiritual called "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel;" and a English music hall song called "I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Cocoanuts" from My Fair Lady.

On a higher note, the Glee Club has been invited to sing at the National Convention of Intercollegiate Men's Choruses at Washington and Lee University this month. This is the first time the convention is being held on the East Coast, and the Glee Club will be one of the 10 best glee clubs performing, Trinkley said.

"It's an honor to be invited to something like this," he said.

David Horan, a Hi-Lo's member, said he looks foward to the convention.

"I've never heard any other college choruses perform. This gives me the opportunity to hear how other groups sound," Horan said.

Jerry Smith, also a Hi-Lo's member, said, "It will be great to perform at the convention because the Glee Club only performs two or three times a year. But all of the hard work will be put into use because you get to perform one or two times a day on tour."

Besides performing at the convention, the Hi-Lo's and the Glee Club will perform at three other venues this month. On March 18, the Hi-Lo's will perform individually and also with the Glee Club at the Greater Johnstown Junior High School. On March 19, the Hi-Lo's will perform in Frederick, Md., and with the Glee Club during a joint concert with a women's glee club from Hood College. On March 20 and 21, the Glee Club will perform at the convention. Then, on their way back, the Hi-Lo's will again perform as a separate group and with the Glee Club in Elizabethtown.

The Glee Club has recently completed a compact disc recording of holiday music. The compact disc will be released in late spring and is tentatively titled P.S. Happy Holidays, Trinkley said. The CD should be available in local record stores and in bookstores, he added.

The CD features the entire Glee Club with the Hi-Lo's performing four songs. The Hi-Lo's perform international holiday carols from around the world on the CD. The group sings, "What Child Is This," "Coventry Child," the Lou Persic (of the "Dreamers") arrangement of "Jingle Bells" and "Carol of the Bells."

In the future, the members of the Hi-Lo's and the Glee Club will perform at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity's 100th anniversary celebration April 11 and at the Blue and White free concert on April 25 in Schwab Auditorium.
