Hefner speaks out
What am I to make of the news of the decision to discontinue selling Playboy magazine on the Penn State campus? Is the Penn State campus now to be perceived as so provincial in its political perceptions that outside views are no longer welcome? What we are talking about here is the largest selling, most influential men's magazine in America and the world. To dismiss this magazine as "pornography" is resorting to a form of Orwellian Newspeak in which you change the perception of a thing by simply changing its label. This is the magazine that published the last article written by Martin Luther King Jr., the world-famous interview with President Carter and will publish later this year the last article written by Alex Haley, the author of "Roots" and a long time contributor to Playboy. Playboy is a magazine that speaks to and for men as no other. Are men's voices no longer welcome at Penn State? At a time when communication between the sexes is more important than ever, those in control of the politics at Penn State seem willing to curtail the dialogue between the sexes rather than encourage it. I think it is important that these issues and insights be read and debated on the Penn State campus and on campuses all across the country.
Hugh M. Hefner
editor in chief, Playboy
