Coach Rene Portland had that warm glow again Friday evening.
The feeling that the women's basketball coach gets whenever all of her Lady Lions score made a guest appearance when one particular player sank a very special basket.
Susan Robinson shot a five-foot jumper from the left baseline to give Penn State a 59-56 lead, but the basket also gave Robinson her 16th and 17th points of the night.
That 17th point was the 2,139th of the senior forward's career, making Robinson Penn State's all-time leading scorer. Before the game though, the record seemed a long time coming as Robinson was held to just four points in the Holy Cross game last Tuesday. However, she was able to break through against the Hornets of Cal State-Sacramento for 19 points.
But in case you missed it, Robinson isn't just the all-time scorer on the women's basketball team -- she's the school's all-time leader. That milestone point put Robinson ahead of former men's basketball player Jesse Arnelle. Arnelle scored 2,138 points when he played for the Lions from 1952 to 1955.
Such an achievement is just a part of the improvement of women's athletics in the eyes of major colleges. Players like Robinson have helped increase support of women's basketball and women's sports in terms of fan base and recognition.
"It's great for our program -- it says a lot for women's basketball," Robinson said. "As Rene always says, the women's team wasn't even in the building (Rec Hall) 10 years ago."
But while the modest Center Point, W.Va., native likes to give credit to those around her, others like to recognize Robinson for her individual accomplishments.
"I think it's great, she's worked really hard," center Kathy Phillips said. "She really doesn't think about it. She thinks more about the team goals and the win than of her own performance."
Portland says this feat is almost expected of the athlete that she first came to know five years ago.
"I think it's exciting," the coach said. "It's another step for a kid who deserves everything she's gotten. She reflects what it is to be a student-athlete with all the effort that she puts in."
Besides her basketball achievements, Robinson was selected to the GTE Academic All-District team for the second year in a row. With a GPA of 3.45 in exercise and sport science, Robinson is being considered for GTE All-America honors, which will be awarded next week.
