Letter to the Editor
Take the challenge
We were dismayed to see, in your Jan. 28 editorial, a perpetuation of the myth that Commonwealth Campuses are somehow inferior to University Park in "educational standard" and "caliber of instructors." According to the Task Force on Undergraduate Education, just the opposite is true: Compared to their counterparts at University Park, freshmen and sophomores at the campuses are far more likely to enjoy learning experiences with senior faculty in small classes. At the Allentown Campus, we agree with you that "some of the ... campuses are suffering from an image problem." We challenge you to take the leadership in correcting the problem. We hope that in the future our newspaper will be more active, more investigative, and less susceptible these demoralizing myths. Specifically, the next time the subject arises, rather than tacitly suggesting that these notions have some foundation in the conditions at the Commonwealth Educational System campuses, you might point out that the notion of them as "a last resort" is a ludicrous misconception.
