Veal production cruel

How would it ease many of our minds if veal calves were treated well during their three to four month long life (Collegian, Feb. 24)? It may not be clear that the low level of iron in the calves' blood, their entirely liquid diet and their small stall size is cruel. But no one denies that the calves are taken from their mothers only one or two days after birth. No one denies that the veal calves are slaughtered after 15 weeks, the length of one semester.

We all hope that veal calves are treated humanely, so much so that we believe it when those who make a living selling veal, like those in the animal science department, tell us not to worry. The truth that the production of veal is inexcusably cruel is very obvious to anyone who thinks about it for themselves. Studies "proving" humane veal treatment are designed to keep you from doing just that.
