OTIS helps you
On behalf of the members of the Organization for Town Independent Students, we would like to thank Larry Ott for his insight into apartment living in his Tuesday, Feb. 18 column. We're sure that there are plenty of dilemmas. One point we feel should be stressed is that you, the tenant, do have rights. You have the right to a decent place to live at a reasonable price; you have the right to a quiet atmosphere (not the next door neighbor that blasts his stereo at all hours of the day). Most of the realtors in town think that the average everyday student who walks into the rental office will take whatever is offered to them with no questions asked and no complaints. In most cases this is the truth. Don't assume that the realtor will tell you everything that you need to know. If you don't ask, they won't offer you the information. If you are unsure of anything regarding living off-campus, come to our office and talk to someone. We have housing information: the apartment list, and plenty of brochures on security deposits, questions you should ask before renting, and a complete guide to living off-campus. We also have legal information: Pennsylvania State Landlord-Tenant Law, Code and Health information, etc. The most important thing to remember: Don't sign anything unless you know exactly what it includes and you have everything in writing. Don't settle for a verbal agreement on anything. If you have problems or questions, or are interested in helping yourself and fellow students, stop by our office and talk to a member today. Our office is located in 101-B HUB behind the HUB desk.
