NEWS
 
Against the advice of many neighborhood activists, the State College Borough Council last night passed a proposal under which the school district's much-debated Community Field may be zoned for public offices and private residences instead of public activities or parks.
 
You have spent hours in your adviser's office in a futile attempt to add a gym class. Completely frustrated, you finally decide to put it off for another semester -- after all, it's only gym. Other than having to take it to get out of Happy Valley, what's the point?
 
"Don't overtrain," is advice often given to athletes. But to avoid overtraining, athletes must be aware of what it is.
 
Muscles flex, sweat drips and sneakers squeak in Rec Hall on a weeknight -- but not always for a basketball game or a gymnastics meet. Students use University exercise facilities every day for personal workouts.
 
It's been said that college students don't get enough sleep. They don't get enough to eat, they don't get enough free time. To add to the list, they don't get enough exercise.
 
The issue over The Nude Maja isn't dead yet.
 
The icy smacks of winter mixed with midterms, papers and speeches make students ready to start heading for the beach.
 
One small step for man . . . while he is suspended in midair, using a treadmill mounted on the wall.
 
Some University officials seem uncertain about details regarding recent allegations that the University overcharged the federal government $6.4 million.
 
With President Bush's narrow win in the New Hampshire lead-off presidential primary last night, it became clear that the incumbent's candidacy and presidency are being held hostage by the economy.
 
University President Joab Thomas has said the libraries are his first priority, and the University Faculty Senate wants to make sure he keeps it that way.
 
 
SPORTS
 
It starts one week from today.
 
It is said that experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. So Penn State's boxers gained some valuable experience when they won only one of their seven bouts at Lock Haven University last Saturday.
 
This weekend's St. Valentine's Invitational meet at Boston University left a sweet taste in the mouth of the women's track team.
 
The women's gymnastics team never suspected that vaulting would be one of its biggest concerns this season.
 
Even though the men's basketball team came out with a road win Monday night, Baltimore Arena did provide some tense moments.
 
Sometimes having too much talent can hurt you. Just ask Coach Rich Lorenzo, who has the unenviable task of watching two of his best wrestlers battle it out for the leadoff spot.
 
Susan Robinson was on the bench with foul trouble. Lynn Dougherty was shooting airballs. Kathy Phillips was having her shots blocked by a 6-foot-8-inch sophomore.
 
Walking on to a basketball team is like bungee cording off a cliff.
