Borough is fair
Recently there has been a lot of talk about the State College Borough's 12-year-old housing ordinance limiting the number of unrelated people living in rental houses to three. The Centre Regional Council of Governments has begun inspections in the area to make sure that this ordinance is being followed. On the opinion page last Thursday the Editorial Opinion alluded to the notion that students were being evicted and thrown out into the streets in the middle of the semester. This is not the case, and I would like to take this time to clear up any misconceptions readers might have on this issue. As an Undergraduate Student Government town senator and chief of the USG Senate's Governmental Relations Committee, I was very concerned when I heard about the renewed enforcement of the 12-year-old ordinance. At first, I was worried that students would feel the impact of a landlord's illegal activity. But, after talking with Herman Slaybaugh, the State College Borough zoning officer, and presenting the State College Borough Council with my concerns, I realized that the borough is willing to make exceptions to ensure that students will not be evicted in mid-semester. Should students find themselves faced with eviction, they should be aware of the various services available on campus. The USG Department of Legal Affairs and the Organization of Town Independent Students offer counseling in these matters. Also, the office of Off-Campus Living and Legal Services in Boucke Building are other resources students can use. The most important thing for students who rent is to realize that they have rights and responsibilities under the law. I would urge anyone facing evictions to contact any of the above organizations for help.
Michael Gillespie
USG town senator
