Painting controversy spurs review of classroom climate

Collegian Staff Writer

The issue over The Nude Maja isn't dead yet.

Three University Faculty Senate committees decided to establish a new committee to evaluate and examine "chilly classroom climate" in response to the controversy surrounding the removal of the Goya print from a Schuylkill Campus classroom last November.

Another committee, the Undergraduate Instruction Committee, also agreed that a new committee should be formed.

Schuylkill Campus officials removed the Maja because it created an uncomfortable environment for a female instructor who taught in the room.

"There is a much deeper issue to be looked at," said David Gold, chairman of the Faculty Affairs Committee.

The Faculty Affairs Committee determined that the incident at the Schuylkill Campus was handled appropriately, but questioned whether or not there should be a difference between documents and paintings and what falls under the First Amendment, said Robert Secor, senate chairman.

The Committee for Commonwealth Education determined that the reproduction's removal was not censorship since it was relocated. But committee members said the incident went too far and should have been resolved between the instructor and the Schuylkill Campus administration, Secor said.

Gold called the incident "the tip of the iceberg" and said it gave focus to a more fundamental issue -- chilly classroom climate.

It brings to light the issue of where to draw the line with the First Amendment, he said.

"Do you end up taking books out of the library because they have sexist language? How far do you go with this?" Gold said.

But if something affects the way in which an instructor teaches a class and hinders the instructor's ability to teach effectively, then it should be removed, Gold said.

Gold said he expects the new committee to be formed sometime next week.
