Coming off its victory at the third annual Paul Tabolt Cup, the ski team traveled to Eagle Rock Ski Resort and Elk Mountain Ski Area last weekend to compete in the Jack Conway Classic, hosted by Kutztown University.

The men's team finished in fourth place, behind the University of Pennsylvania, Bucknell and Navy, while the women ended up in first place overall. On Saturday, the women finished second to West Virginia, but then made up the time on Sunday, defeating the Lady Mountaineers. Bucknell finished third both days.

On Saturday, the men's competition was cancelled due to the lack of backup fences for the skiers to slalom through. There were only three backup gates, and after half of the skiers were finished, more than three gates were broken.

The team leaders on the men's side were Mike Costello (sixth in 1 minute, 39.42 seconds on Sunday) and Jason Smith (eighth in 1:39.63). John Townsend of Navy won his second straight men's competition with a time of 1:34.4.

"He (Townsend) is just getting a little better than us," Costello said. "There's so many different ways to put things together. He's doing a lot of everything right."

For the women, Mimi Suppes led the team (fourth overall on Saturday, second on Sunday), followed by Kristen Silvey (fifth, sixth) and Maggie Zajodel (ninth, third).

"We are working a lot harder now," Silvey said. "Our standards are much higher. We are stronger now then we were in the beginning of the season."

The B-teams captured first, second and third places for their meet. Renee Biltgen and Allyssa Ilov led the women, while Cary Asendorf won for the men.

The teams next travel to Wisp in McHenry, Md., this Saturday and Sunday to compete in a meet hosted by West Virginia.
