Don't criticize, help
OK Collegian, you had your chance to criticize our programs and thank you for the advice, but now let me offer you some advice. Instead of lambasting us all the time, why don't you try working with us. Since I've been with the Undergraduate Student Government, not once have I seen a student (not even a member of the Collegian staff) come into the office and say, "I think tuition is too high, what can I do to help reduce it." To place the blame on Mark Stewart and Merryl Werber for not reducing tuition is unfair and an insult. They have instituted a tuition workshop with the University Board of Trustees; gone to Harrisburg to lobby state representatives for more funds; and spent countless other hours talking with administrators, trustees and representatives. For the Collegian to criticize what we haven't done is an insult to all the time and effort that we put into helping students at Penn State. Mark Stewart, Merryl Werber and USG alone are not going to solve the tuition problem or the rest of this University's problems for that matter. While it's easy for people to sit back and say it's their responsibility alone, each student must act to help solve our University's problems. So instead of sitting around criticizing us, why don't you try helping us. Although I know this probably isn't as fun, you might actually contribute to accomplishing something instead of just writing about it.
Dave Torrillo
treasurer, USG
