HERSHEY -- How could it happen? Worse, how could it happen twice in one season?

HERSHEY -- The chocolate seemed to melt in DeRon Hayes' hands Saturday.

The Lions probably didn't like wrestling on Super Bowl Sunday. Whatever the reason, No. 3 Penn State relied exclusively on superior ability to defeat Eastern Wrestling League rivals West Virginia (28-12) and Pitt (26-13).

When Nancy Darcsh, women's basketball coach at Ohio State, was asked to compare yesterday's game against Penn State to a 79-73 loss to the Lady Lions six weeks ago, she could only reply, "24 points," referring to the margin between the two defeats.

Going into this weekend, the ice hockey team was expecting two victories over ranked opponents in front of its home crowd. What it got was a lesson in humility.
