Madness must stop
This campus has long been infested by the disease of homophobic prejudice and it is spreading. This was recently exemplified to me on a Saturday night when I accepted a friend's invitation to go to a party at his fraternity. He has been a brother there for over a year, and has come out of the closet since then. I had been to the fraternity on numerous occassions and was always generally accepted. In fact, they expressed interest for me to rush last semester, which I declined. Shortly after I arrived a brother asked me to leave. The twisted reasoning behind this action was that since I had been with a friend who was gay, I too was gay and not worthy to be in their house. As soon as I had entered, I'd been watched carefully, and by occasionally placing my hand on a male's shoulder during a conversation or when passing by and wishing to express a quick hello, I was labeled as being too friendly, and as being gay. I am not gay (and I say that not to defend myself, but to illustrate that this accusation of me was totally unfounded). If someone looks hard enough for clues to confirm some preconceived notion, they will find something that may be interpreted to use as 'evidence.' To ask me to leave because of their abundance of sexual insecurity is intolerable and inexcusable. This is truly madness. The prejudice is always there, and is not only against gays, but now the friends of gays fall victim to it also. It is a sad story, but what is more sobering is that it actually happened on a large campus in the 'equality' days of the '90s. This madness must stop.
