Discriminatory?

Portland must prove she is more than just aware of policy

Rene Portland needs to come clean.

Portland, the women's basketball coach, must say whether she will enforce the University's non-discrimination policy, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

In Portland's own words: "I am very aware of the University's policies and very aware of what the athletic department has stated and I am very aware of my position at the University and the adherence to the policy that I must do as a member."

By now everyone at the University should be aware of the policy. But being aware does not mean you are following the policy. It is time for Portland to give a more definitive statement and to show that she is adhering to the policy.

The recent protest at the Temple vs. Penn State women's basketball game has shown that people are skeptical about Portland's recruitment practices. Actions -- not words -- will reveal her true intent.

Portland must pledge not to discriminate against lesbian players. If she refuses, the University and the athletic department should investigate her recruiting practices.

The athletic department has helped raise awareness by holding a series of workshops about discrimination, which everyone should attend.

Adding sexual orientation to the University's non-discrimination policy was the easy part. Portland said she is aware of the policy, now the University must make sure she is abiding by it.
