Murphy lays law for Icers

Collegian Sports Writer

Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

Murphy's Law.

That law is about to be rewritten.

Enter Dave Murphy, forward for the 15-3-1 ice hockey team. Enter the puck into the net. Enter points -- lots of them.

Murphy is leading the Icers so far this year with 35 points through 19 games. He has 15 goals; eight in the last five games. It is safe to say that the man is on a hot streak. He had two goals and two assists on Friday, and one goal and three assists on Saturday.

Murphy attributes a large part of his recent scoring surge to an upswing in confidence. With success comes confidence, and with confidence comes even greater success. If the process continues to feed upon itself, Murphy is on pace to have his best season as an Icer.

At his current level of play, there is no telling how far he can go in the remaining 15 games. At his current clip, Murphy is on line to break last year's mark of 57 points. He notched 23 goals last year, and that mark can just as easily fall prey to Murphy's lust for the goal.

"I'm just playing with a lot more confidence right now," Murphy said. "Coach (Joe Battista) has shown a lot more confidence in me as well."

His confidence and intense play have not escaped the watchful eye of Battista and the way he is playing has a positive effect on the rest of the team.

"He continues to be our best two-way hockey player," Battista said. "I'm real pleased at the progress he's made since he was a freshman. He's playing with an incredible amount of confidence. And he's lifting everybody's game around him a couple of levels, because of the way he's playing right now."

The 5-foot-8-inch, 170-pound junior is also conscious of the big picture and realizes that team play overrides any individual accomplishments. The need for a win is more important than the need for individual accolades.

"You're never as good as you think you are after a win," Murphy said. "That's never been more true than this weekend. I don't think we're as good as the scoreboard indicates. We have a lot of work to do.

"We had a tendency to develop some bad habits this weekend, and we are going to have to break those habits against a team like Ohio University."

The need for Murphy's offense is even more crucial with the team's recent rash of injuries. Chris Cervellero is out for this weekend. Ross Cowan, Don Lamison and Jason Niedt are questionable for Friday's game. Add into this Cliff Graziano's (21 points, 13 goals) suspension for a butt-end infraction.
