They blew it

I would like to thank Housing and Food Services for acknowledging the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by having a special dinner in all units of the dining halls. However, I am thoroughly displeased by food services' ignorance of African-American culture and heritage.

Believe it or not, African Americans eat several types of foods. Pork ribs, collard greens, biscuits and cornbread are not intrinsic to African-American heritage. For some, their heritage includes ugali, cous cous or ackee. If food services wanted to commemorate Dr. King, a meal similar to their "Masterpiece Meal" features would have been more than appropriate.

In the future, when planning a cultural meal, Food Services should consult with people who belong to that culture. There are plenty of student organizations on campus who could have given accurate information so that the stereotypical meal that was served could have been avoided.

Penn State students have a limited knowledge of different cultures. Food Services had a unique chance to enlighten and inform students about another culture, unfortunately they blew it.
