Letter to the Editor
Greeks urge choice
Members of the Greek Council, consisting of the student leaders of the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic and the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as professional staff from the Division of Student Programs, have discussed the recent Collegian article featuring the Moss brothers and their experiences in a predominantly white Greek-letter organization. We were discouraged to read about the ostracism that they have felt from some African-American students. We also believe, however, that those who have been critical of the Moss brothers do not represent the general feelings of the African-American community. Our discussion turned to the importance of the Greek experience for many students. We believe that the strength of the Greek community here is to provide a wide range of opportunities for students who seek a community such as a sorority or a fraternity as a means for contributing to their individual, personal and educational development. We value the individual nature of the decision to affiliate with a sorority or a fraternity. We also believe that by working together, fraternity and sorority members of all backgrounds can enrich the Greek experience by honoring individual choices and promoting a greater tolerance for those choices.
