Make a difference

What is wrong with the students of today? Students do not seem to be involved with the issues of today. Take for instance the students in China who protested in Tiananmen Square, the students in Czechoslovakia who protested and demonstrated for a new form of government, and the students in East and West Germany who tore down "The Wall." What are we doing?

Sure we don't have the same problems those students had, but we do have one -- the environment. A year ago, around Earth Day, this was the hottest topic, people were trying to contribute and get involved. Everyone had a pin, poster or shirt on the environment; "Save the earth," "Save our planet." It seemed like everyone would come together and make a change. I guess not.

Now a majority of those people are sitting around with their shirts and buttons, complaining about the world's conditions and wondering whether their children will live normal lives.

I walk around campus and I see aluminum and glass containers in normal trash cans, people using aerosol sprays, and lights, water, radios and televisions being left on. Even with special facilities, like recyclable waste baskets, some people are lazy and don't care.

Since we, the students, are not going to overthrow a government or a military or tear down a wall, I think we should all concentrate on saving the environment. This could beginwith people recycling, saving energy, protesting or even boycotting industries which harm the environment, and joining the clubs and societies here at Penn State. We, the students, should once again become the most active portion of the population and make a difference as did the students of the '60s.
