Bike tour to provide support for Multiple Sclerosis Society

Although classes are in full swing many students are already dreaming of next summer, which is now just a pedal away thanks to "A Day In Paradise."

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's central Pennsylvania chapter is sponsoring "A Day in Paradise Bike Tour '91" to raise funds for research and provide support services to local people affected by the disease.

Mulitiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It affects people between the ages of 15 to 50 and can rob people of their ability to walk normally, speak properly and see clearly.

The bike tour offers food, prizes, and three routes to accommodate every rider from beginner to advanced cycling. Bikers have a choice among 30, 70 or 100 miles.

"These tours will be great for students because they can go as fast as they please without worrying about pedestrians," said Susan Ricker, branch coordinator of the local chapter.

To participate, bikers must register and mail a $10 registration fee by Sept. 16 and then begin collecting pledges. Each cyclist must raise a minimum of $50 to ride.

Bikers who collect a minimum of $100 are qualified to win a prize. But the more pledges one collects, the bigger the prize. The prizes range from an official "A Day In Paradise" T-shirt to a DP AirGometer Stepper or $350 Bike Shop Voucher.

"Participants get their pledges first, do the tour and then they collect their money and turn it in by the specified due date," said Ricker.

Ricker said registration forms will be provided this week on campus or interested bikers can call the organization at (717) 326-3751.
