At first I just heard about it in passing, then I questioned the line at Graham's and finally I wanted to scream when it became every other advertisement on the radio and in the papers. It is this sexist problem called Playboy's "Girls of the Big Ten." First of all, we are women. Second of all, we are women attending universities and colleges to supposedly further our minds and careers; not to feed into the sexist, degrading and oppressing attitudes of a male-dominated society. Frankly, it upsets me that while doing something respectable, women still are favored for their looks and not much more.
Isn't is great that Penn state is in the Big Ten now? But what the hell does that have to do with women's breasts? Playboy and all other magazines of that genre simply promote the simple idea that women should be appreciated for their bodies alone; at least that is the final outcome of these pictures. The end result being that women are selling themselves, and the men who purchase these magazines, short. We as a race are worth much more. Let us honor the great strides and achievements of women in respect to their academic, career and personal achievements rather than arbitrary traits no one has much control over. You do not have to be a true-blue feminist to see something is blatantly wrong here. However, it should not be overlooked that the women featured in the Big Ten spread possess exemplary academic and professional goals; making it even more unfortunate that the only reasult is they are still viewed as T&A. If a lot of effort, money and enthusiasm is to go into a women's issue, please Penn State let it be something that will promote, not degrade women on the whole.
