Winners break records in Nittany Valley 10K

Collegian Sports Writer

Yesterday was a good day for a jog, especially for 610 people who wanted to enjoy the Arts Festival activities. These runners participated in the 16th annual Nittany Valley 10K Road Race. About 590 people finished the race.

The overall winners' names are getting as familiar as John Sununu. Joe LeMay won the men's division for the second consecutive year, while Wendy Nelson won the women's side for the third year in a row.

Lemay won in 31 minutes and 9 seconds while Nelson won in 36:16, both by far new course records.

The top four men's finishers were LeMay, John Russell, 32:15, Eric Wilkins, 32:20, and Brandon Hilliard, 32:30.

For the women, it was Nelson, Anne Nash, 37:54, Barb Swan, 38:20, and Amy Harlott, 38:34.

People from everywhere showed up for yesterday's race.

Erin Coffey, 20, of Malvern, who is a senior at the University of Arizona took part in her first 10K.

"My sister and brother, who are Penn State alumni, are also running," she said.

The men's age division winners were: 17 and under, Terry Shea, 34:49; 18-24, Mark Wimmer, 32:37; 25-29, Joseph Cresko, 32:48; 30-34, Tim Dunlap, 32:49; 35-39, Tony DeCrappeo, 35:39; 40-44, Dennis Wanner, 37:03; 45-49, Leroy Straley, 38:41; 50-54, Ted Petrie, 40:31 and 55-59, Jim Vogelsang, 45:21.

The women's winners were: 18 and under, Meira Minard, 40:36; 18-29, Sue Borawski, 39:20; 30-39, Evelynn Ellis, 39:23; 40-49, Judy Bugyi, 40:57; 50-59, Marie Doll, 54:18 and 60-69, Ruth Kazez, 53:56.

The "middle of the pack" winners were John Cozanoski for the men and Linda Lamson for the women.

George Etzweier, 71, of State College, has been running these kinds of races since 1973.

"My son and grandson are running, and I am just hoping to do the best I can," he said.

Even much younger people enjoyed the 6.2 mile race. Ezra Fitz, 14, son of Earl and Juliane Fitz of State College, and Nathan Paine, 13, son of Randy and Sandy Paine also of State College, are looking foreward to the race.

"We just want to run our pace," they said.
