Keep up the fight

The June 20 editorial "'Just do it," is wise advice for a municipality that has delayed enacting legislation preventing unfair treatment in housing. The edit is also correct in noting the critical role that students can play.

Members of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Student Alliance (LGBSA) were instrumental in conducting a survey done in the spring of 1990 on discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay and bisexual citizens, including unfair treatment in housing. I have sent a final analysis of the results to the State College Borough Council.

In brief, 17 percent of those contacted reported housing discrimination; 58 percent hide their sexual orientation to avoid discrimination by their landlords, and 49 percent expected problems if a landlord was to discover their their sexual orientation.

Nearly everyone (95 percent) expected a potential landlord to treat them in a discriminatory fashion were they to mention that they were lesbian, gay or bisexual.

Without LGBSA, these incidences would never have been known.

A recent New York Times report noted that many incidents of bias directed against lesbians and gay men go unreported. Other studies show an increase in such violence.

Fear of additional harassment by police or employees or landlords is a powerful inhibitor, preventing victims from notifying the appropriate authorities. Nor does it encourage reporting if there is no basis for protection.

I urge students to continue to insist that the council "just do it." Without an inclusive fair housing ordinance, no one will tell and many will hurt. With such an ordinance, perhaps more will feel that they are worthy of fair treatment.
