NEWS
 
The threat of slavery persists in today's society, a professor of English and women's studies from Emory University in Atlanta said Thursday night in 101 Kern.
 
Only one woman competed in the Penn State Chess Club's first tournament, which drew 33 devoted chess players to 173 Willard last weekend.
 
University Board of Trustees President Mimi Coppersmith Fredman said she believes the trustees will approve the addition of the words "sexual orientation" to the University's non-discrimination policy at their May meeting.
 
The University Student Advisory Board will send a letter to University President Joab Thomas today, accusing the University's Affirmative Action Office of not complying with Thomas' promise to end discrimination.
 
A University committee examining the climate for lesbians and gay men will wrap up a survey on sexual orientation and deliver a report based on five months of investigation and the survey's results next month.
 
Earth Day may be over, but students and professors agree that today's concern with the environment is here to stay.
 
The Centre Region Council of Governments last night received a copy of the Centre Area Transportation Authority's proposed 1991-92 budget which includes an assessment of contributions from the University and municipalities.
 
 
SPORTS
 
Maybe the new nickname for the baseball team should be the "cardiac kids."
 
It's becoming an old habit for the baseball team.
 
The Lady Lions swept the 400- and the 1,500-meter events and the javelin throw Saturday during the Lady Lion Invitational at the Nittany Lion Track.
 
For the second week in a row the women's golf team captured first place in a tournament. This time Penn State defeated Methodist College by 27 strokes at the William and Mary/Ford's Colony Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
 
His first name, Tyoka, is a derivative of a Swahili name meaning, "One who brings joy." But if you asked Blue team quarterbacks Tony and John Sacca how they felt Sunday morning you would probably get a less than joyous answer.
 
The men's golf team dominated its last Atlantic 10 Championship, winning its fifth consecutive team title and placing five golfers on the conference team this weekend at Lancaster, Pa.
 
This weekend the equestrian club had another successful showing, and a very important one as well.
 
After shutting out both opponents in the first two rounds of the Midwest Regional Rugby Championship at Ohio State last weekend, the Penn State Rugby Club advanced to face an "arch-nemesis" from Ohio in the semifinals.
 
The men's tennis team tied Temple for third place overall in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Tournament. All three of the Lions' doubles teams placed in the top four and two singles players also placed.

Sweat flew from the Feld Ballets/New York dancers and the audience clapped endlessly for most of the more-than-2½-hour performance in Eisenhower Auditorium Friday night.
 
The audience hated her.
