Letter to the Editor
Pro-equality
I think I can speak for more than just myself in saying that a rising number of students have become fed up with the pro-women stance of many groups on campus. Instead of trying to be for an individual sex, why not try to be pro-equality for a change? Cases in point: -- Not once did I see an editorial comment by some of these "women's groups" condemning the exploitation of men at the Happy Valley Brewery last week, yet I have seen editorials about Playboy's Feb. 26 advertisement in the Collegian and Playboy's recent interviews. -- I haven't seen a women's group say, "Yes, we are equal in both rights and responsibilities: We should get equal pay for equal work, equal respect for equal accomplishments, and just like men, we should be eligible for the draft and front line duty in war." Until equal responsibility for both sexes comes about, there can be no hope for total equality. I could go on about the sexual discrimination of males: When was the last time the Undergraduate Student Government Department of Women's Concerns rallied for the right of male students to be able to use the female-only weight room in White Building. You can be damn sure that if it was for males only there would be hell to pay, but since it works the other way, it is overlooked. Of the scholarshps available in 314 Shields, a great number have one discriminating factor: the award's receiver must be female. Are there any that are just for males? Of course not, that would be wrong! Do we need a Center for Men's Studies? Regardless of whether we do or not, we could never have one -- that would be sexist! The enlightened students and administrators of the campus should come to realize that you either have full equality and responsibility or you don't: If there are going to be weight rooms for females only, there have to be rooms for males only. If there is a Women Students' Lounge there must also be one for men. If women are going to have equal rights, they are also going to have to serve our country in the same manner as men. If letters are going to complain to Playboy, as Melissa Hardoby promises, then letters should be written by the same group to protest the exploitation of males who "gyrated and pelvic-thrusted" at the Happy Valley Brewery. The conclusion: Let's get rid of these barriers based on whether or not you have external sex organs. Instead of the Department for Women's Concerns (which is, quite obviously, inherently sexist) let us have a Department for Sexual Equality. Afterall, isn't that what we are trying to work toward?
