After eight years of playing varsity lacrosse in high school and college, Karen Hoysted finally got to play in a game with her younger sister, Sara.
And Sara, a freshman defender, made her big sister proud, scoring her first collegiate goal in the No. 1 Lady Lions' 14-8 victory over Delaware (2-4) yesterday.
"That felt really good," Sara Hoysted said. "When I went in the main thing I wanted to do was work on defense, but I saw the open space and just went in."
Sara Hoysted's goal came at nine minutes into the second half. Midfielder Ann Kolongowski took the ball off the draw and passed it to Hoysted, who advanced down the field past Delaware's leading scorer, Jenn Rinnander, to put the ball into the goal. The score increased Penn State's lead to 9-5, and came only 13 seconds after Penn State's previous goal.
"Sara is real poised," Coach Julie Williams said. "She likes to go to the goal, and we like to have defenders who go to the goal. You have to learn so much of the game sense as a freshman, once she learns a little more of what we expect on defense she'll be better. She has a lot of potential."
The senior Hoysted didn't let her sister outdo her, though, as she scored two goals of her own, the second coming after her sister's goal.
"I think I had my eyes closed on the second goal," Hoysted said. "I didn't even know it went in until I heard the cheers."
Since Moorestown High School (N.J.) had both freshman and varsity squads, the sisters never played in a game together. Karen Hoysted said she was hoping for the opportunity.
"I was really psyched," she said. "I wanted her to come up here. I tried to keep quiet and allow her to make up her own mind, but I sent subconscious hints. I would buy her Penn State things and mail them to her."
"I like playing with her, she teaches me a lot," Sara Hoysted said.
Karen Hoysted has a lot she can teach. The senior midfielder is a four-year starter with six goals and one assists this season. She has recently been named to the United States Under-23 squad with teammates Megan Smith, Elena Brazer and Kolongowski.
"(Being named to the Under-23 team) was a really good feeling," she said. "I worked hard for it."
Karen Hoysted has 56 goals and seven assists for 63 career points. She was a second-team All-American last year.
"Karen has deadly speed coming through the middle," Williams said.
