The men's tennis team hammered Atlantic-10 opponent St. Bonaventure yesterday, 9-0, denying the Bonnies even a single set.
The Lions (13-7) remained in command throughout the match, holding St. Bonaventure (8-11) to three or fewer games in all but two sets.
"I think Penn State was pretty much in control," St. Bonaventure coach Pat Panzarella said. "We could hit with them, but we couldn't win enough games."
Penn State steamed through the singles matches as No. 1 Marc Price beat Thiru Govender, 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 Dave Schoenly whipped Tim Prise, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Scott Pickering defeated Rich Chrampanis, 6-1, 6-3. No. 4 Corey Goldstein continued the momentum with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Matt Ryan. At No. 5, Greg Gaunt thrashed Paul Armentano, 6-0, 6-1. Chad Skorupka rounded out the singles play with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Dave Pauoli.
"I thought we looked sharp," Coach Jan Bortner said. "We seemed to be very decisive. I thought we looked good on our short game; when we got a short ball we were attacking and putting it away."
The Lions also gave the Bonnies fits with some monster serves, racking up several points on aces and limp St. Bonaventure returns.
"We've been trying to be a little bit more explosive with our serving," Bortner said. "I thought for the most part, our guys were really hitting their serves, trying to use their serve as a weapon."
Penn State went into doubles play with no letdown in intensity.
"We didn't get sloppy," Bortner said. "We were up 6-0, but we didn't relax, we went right after them."
The No. 1 duo of Price and Schoenly put away Govender and Pauoli, 6-1, 6-2. Gaunt and Skorupka defeated Ryan and Armentano, 6-1, 7-5, and Marc Payne and Sean Snee breezed past Mike Novak and Frank Cherichella, 6-1, 6-0. Snee saw his first action since injuring his ankle.
"It was a team effort, everybody did their job," Price said. "Everybody played well and with confidence."
The Lions are looking to continue their strong play as they face a fearsome West Virginia team tomorrow in Morgantown. Along with Harvard, which defeated the Lions last week, WVU has been the dominant team in the region.
"They're awesome. What can you say?" Bortner said. "The guys are looking forward to see how they'll match up and whether we can push them a little bit."
