After scoring a combined four points in its last two matches, the rugby club hopes to improve its 3-2 record this weekend with a needed offensive thrust from its backs.
The A and B sides will travel to the Reading Tournament for matches tomorrow and Sunday, while the C and D sides journey to the Allegheny Tournament.
The A side will regain the leadership and experience of captain and scrum-half Pete Karmilowicz, who missed last week's game because of his participation in a select-side tournament.
Back Scott Davis said he believes Karmilowicz's presence tomorrow will be a "confidence booster" since he acts as a link between coordinating on-field efforts by the forwards and backs.
Karmilowicz will "help us along better," Davis said.
Assistant coach Fraser Grigor said the team should be back at relatively full strength. He added the club hopes to receive better execution offensively from its backs.
"We want to play well but not just slip by," Davis added.
Grigor said the forwards are producing the type of solid play they are capable of; however, the coaches would like to see them play more consistently in both halves of a match.
Grigor said he was unsure what teams would be at Reading but he expects quality men's clubs and collegiate teams because the sponsors are trying to make it a competitive tournament. "That makes it a little tougher competition," he said.
The club hopes to be peaking and playing at its full potential by the Midwest Tournament in two weeks, Davis said.
He said the team needs to not only take advantage of scoring opportunities but to create them too. He added that the backs need to make adjustments and improvements in their plays.
Davis said the squad was concentrating about "getting our skills down and fine-tuning our game" at this week's practices.
The club also made efforts to improve conditioning which can prove to be a factor in a close game as evidenced by last week's 4-0 victory over IUP.
