At stake, the voice of Commonwealth campus students

Collegian Staff Writer

The Council of Commonwealth Student Governments will decide this weekend who will be the voice of the Commonwealth campuses next year.

CCSG will hold elections for a new coordinator, University Student Advisory Board representatives, University Faculty Senate members and University Board of Trustee representatives in Findlay Commons. Nominations will be tonight and each candidate will give a platform speech tomorrow morning.

CCSG coordinator Brian Donaldson said each Commonwealth campus sends two representatives to vote in tomorrow's elections. Candidates must receive a two-thirds majority vote to be elected, he added.

Donaldson said he hopes the new officers will continue the organization's success built in the last few years.

"They should speak to the administration and Commonwealth campuses as much as possible," he said. "Keep the lines of communication open."

CCSG representative to USAB Ron Fischer said the council should work closely with the Undergraduate Student Government and the Graduate Student Association.

"CCSG should be very active," he said. "It should keep a basic but very involved agenda."

The campus presidents will bring their newly elected presidents with them this weekend. "It makes the transition to next year easier," Fischer said.

Other than the elections, Fischer will discuss a report the CCSG Academic Advising Taskforce is compiling on each campus' quality of academic advising, he said. The report focuses on how advising programs work and how they differ between campuses, Fischer said.

Donaldson said CCSG will continue working on a plan for a Fall Semester break. If implemented, the break would probably fall during the week of Thanksgiving, he said.

The council will also begin a letter writing campaign to lobby for state funds for the University.

"We're going to be talking to senators and legislators," Donaldson said, "We want to get every campus involved."

CCSG's year-end banquet will be held tomorrow evening. James Ryan, vice president of continuing education will speak, Donaldson said.

"Last year, Dr. Ryan was the CEO for the Wilkes-Barre campus," he said. "We thought it would be interesting to get the perspective of someone who was at a Commonwealth campus and then came up here."
