This weekend some University members will reap the benefits of their academic and administrative work.
Students, faculty and staff will receive awards at 2 p.m. Sunday in Eisenhower Auditorium at the University's annual Awards Convocation ceremony, said Karen Rugh, director of University relations.
Charles L. Hosler, acting vice president and provost, will preside at the ceremony and University President Joab Thomas will speak, Rugh said. Following Thomas' speech, Hosler and William W. Asbury, vice president for student services, will present the student awards, she said.
Rugh said 163 undergraduate students were chosen for awards.
The awards for academic excellence include the President's Freshman Award, the President's Sparks Award for sophomores and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award for juniors and seniors. Four graduating seniors will receive the John W. White Graduate Fellowhip for community leadership and scholastic achievment. Another award, the Ernest B. McCoy Award, will honor one male and one female athlete who has demonstrated scholarly achievement, she said.
A new award this year is the Graduate Student Service Award to be given to a graduate student exhibiting both academic success and leadership abilities, Rugh said.
In addition to student awards, faculty and staff will also be acknowledged. Hosler and Howard B. Palmer, associate dean of the graduate school, will present the faculty research awards, Rugh said.
Thomas will conclude the ceremony by presenting the faculty-staff achievement awards. These awards include the Barash Award for Human Services and the John E. Wilkinson Award for Administrative Excellence, Rugh said.
Dr. Carl H. Wolgemuth, this year's recipient of the Wilkinson award, said, "I've been in a number of administrative positions in the last few years and have tried to do as well as I could in those."
Wolgemuth is the College of Engineering's associate dean for undergraduate studies and helped design the recently instituted Engineering Cooperative Education Program, providing students with work experience. Wolgemuth's other administrative works include overseeing the Minority in Engineering Program and the Women in Engineering Program.
In order to receive one of the awards, students, faculty and staff must be nominated by colleagues, Rugh said. Committees then select the recipients according to the award's criteria, she said.
Committee chair Thomas Eakin, assistant vice president of student services, said each member of his committee, consisting of representatives from administration and student programs, reviewed information on the nominees. The committee then discussed the possible nominees before making final decisions.
