The men's tennis team will play Atlantic-10 rival St. Bonaventure at 4 this afternoon at the Penn State Tennis Club.
As always, because it is an A-10 contest this is considered an important match by Coach Jan Bortner.
"We have to do well if we want to receive high seeding at the Atlantic 10 tournament at the end of April." he said.
Right now Bortner is concerned with his team's own week spots, not St. Bonaventure's strong points.
"I don't know much about them, but I was impressed with their No. 1 player, Thiru Govender, when I saw him at the Rolex Invitational in November. He was a good, solid player," Bortner said. "A team with a good No. 1 is usually a good team."
Penn State will use the same lineup as last weekend which worked well against both Harvard and Boston College. Sophomore Marc Price will play No. 1 singles with Dave Schoenly, Scott Pickering, Corey Goldstein, Greg Gaunt and Chad Skorupka at Nos. 2 through 6, respectively.
Doubles will be played by Price and Schoenly, Gaunt and Skorupka, and Pickering and Marc Payne. Sophomore Sean Snee is still out due to an ankle injury.
Bortner cited three factors the team worked on in practice this week to prepare for the match: the approach game, return of serve, and poaching. Poaching is the process in doubles where a player criss-crosses in front of his partner in order to get a shot originally intended for his partner.
"Right now we are concerned with our own week spots," Bortner said. "Doubles are critical. They have improved a lot, but I know in matches down the stretch we will need good doubles."
