With the collegiate competition season behind them, the men's and women's diving teams still have a date left on their schedule.
The Senior National Diving Prequalifying Championships begin today and continue through Sunday at the Montgomery Aquatic Center in Rockville, Md. The event will feature competition on the 10-meter platform, as well as the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Seniors Jeff Eagles and Steve Zamborsky, who both placed high at the NCAA Championships last weekend, along with freshman standout Chris Devine and redshirt senior Mike Westwood, will head to the prequalifying meet for the Lions.
Junior diver Amy Schmidt, who competed on both the 1- and 3-meter boards at the NCAA prequalifying meet but failed to advance, will represent the women's team.
The competition, which represents the Northeast region and is one of five in the country, is open to all divers 18 and older. The top four finishers, among the field of 60 on each board, advance to the Senior National Diving Championships, April 17-20 at the University of Minnesota.
"Everyone looks real fresh and we're looking at this meet more seriously than we have in the past," diving coach Craig Brown said. "We're looking to have some people in the top 8, flirting with making the contest."
Eagles, who is coming off a 16th-place performance at the NCAA Championships which earned him Honorable Mention All-America honors, said he is looking for similar success at this meet.
"My goal is to get in the top four, and right now I feel a little bit better on the 3-meter," Eagles said. "With the exception of three or four people, we're going to face the same people as we saw at (the NCAA prequalifying meet)."
At last season's Senior National Prequalifying meet, Westwood finished sixth on the 3-meter board, but did not compete on the diving team this season for personal reasons. Brown said Westwood will return to the Lions next season.
