Lady laxers to host Delaware

Collegian Sports Writer

A No. 1 ranking and an undefeated record is what the women's lacrosse team is taking into today's 3 p.m. matchup with Delaware at the Lady Lion Field, yet Coach Julie Williams still isn't satisfied with the team's consistency.

Although Williams said the team is "sitting pretty" at the top of the charts, she wants consistency in both halves of the game, a goal she's set for today's game. The Lady Lions (6-0), Williams said, are not as intense at the start of the game.

"We have to play a full game, we have to concentrate on the first half," she said. "The key is trying to find consistency throughout the game and I think we're ready to do that. We're not quite in synch in first two minutes of play and that's our main goal for Delaware."

The Lady Lions have scored 10 more goals in the second half (33) than in the first.

"We can't assume we're going to kick butt in the second half," senior Megan Smith said. "We have to think we're behind when we're walking onto the field."

"We just can't be a second-half team," senior Lynn Burnes agreed. "We've been trying to figure out in warmups how to get us started."

Last year, however, the Lady Lions dominated the first-half action in the Delaware game, scoring nine goals in the first half to rout the Hens, 11-4. Delaware is sporting basically the same team, with the addition of freshman Jenn Rinnander. Rinnander, recruited by Penn State, leads the Hens with 14 points off nine goals and five assists.

Rinnander is followed in scoring by Meghan Mulqueen with 11 points (10 goals, one assist). In goal for Delaware will be Leslie Saylor, who boasts a 59.2 percent save average.

"We're not taking Delaware lightly, they have some quick players," Smith said. "We can't get overconfident."

Delaware is 2-3 this season, and has not beaten a ranked team this season, dropping games to No. 4 Maryland, No. 9 James Madison and No. 5 Lafayette. Penn State is 93-8-1 at home, and 10-2 in the series with Delaware.

The Lady Lions secured first place in the polls with a 9-6 victory over then-No. 1 William and Mary and a 10-9 victory over No. 2 Virginia this past weekend.

Smith is the team's leading scorer, with 11 goals and eight assists for 19 points. She followed by Mary Ann Foley with 15 points (nine goals, six assists) and Ann Kolongowski with 12 points (eight goals, four assists).

Smith is fourth on Penn State's all-time assist list (76). Foley is 11th in both all-time goals and all-time points.

Notes: Smith, Karen Hoysted, Elena Brazer and Kolongowski have been named to the United States Under-23 squad, which will play in England against its national team on May 27. Smith, a second-team All-American selection last year, led the nation in assists at the end of last season. Hoysted and Brazer are also second-team All-Americans and Kolongowski scored a hat trick in Penn State's victory over William and Mary.
