Letter to the Editor
Double standard
I support women's rights as part of my overall support for human rights. This includes men and women's rights to be respected as more than pieces of meat. On March 23 I was extremely upset after seeing (and reading) the article "(Un)dressed to thrill." This front-page article celebrated a male strip show. It presented a debasing image of men. But I read not one editorial from the "enlightened" Collegian staff or its readers about the unfairness of this. I can't imagine the furor that would erupt if the daily rag put a photo of a scantily clad woman on the front page accompanied by an article describing howling men leering at female strippers. The support of the women for the show coupled with the female community's disgust with negative female images in dance revues and the media sets a double standard. This sends a definite message. Many women think it is okay if a man is grabbed, scratched and "feels like a piece of meat" but it is not okay for this to happen to a woman. The truth is that what is okay or morally right applies to both sexes. Wile some women (and men) are trying to set equal standards for both sexes, many are lagging behind. Kim Eisele's "(Un)dressed to kill" is clear proof that she, the Collegian editors and certainly some women at the show need to take a hard look at what they give versus what they ask from others. That article, and its acceptance by many readers, represents a serious setback for the ideal of mutual respect between the sexes. Both women and men need to work harder at identifying double standards and eliminating them. We also need to set mutually beneficial and acceptable standards of behavior. Pointing out only the faults of others is not a complete solution. The solution is working on ourselves and with others.
