Penn State may have a national championship in basketball after all.
The women's 3-on-3 intramural basketball champions will vie for the 8th Annual Schick Superhoops 3-on-3 National Championship tonight at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
The Penn State team consists of the captain Rhea Coblentz (sophomore-speech communications), Dawn Kopec (junior-exercise and sports science), Michelle Chastulik (junior-pre-med) and Kate McLaughlin (junior-English).
In all, over 800 teams participated in the tournament, which was co-sponsored by Schick and K Swiss Sneakers, but it's down to only two -- Penn State against West Chester. The two will meet during halftime of the Philadelphia 76ers-Charlotte Hornets game tonight.
In advancing to the championship game, the team had to win the Penn State tournament on Jan. 18 and emerge from a field of 50 to win the Eastern regional tournament at the University of Pennsylvania on March 11. The team will represent the East in the title game, said Jen Lee of intramural sports.
"We only had one really close game thus far, but West Chester will be tough," Coblentz said.
The game will be played with a half-court format, two eight-minute halves, a running clock, and a modified foul system, where shooting fouls occur only after the fifth team foul. One shot and possession will be rewarded for every foul past the limit, but the clock continues to run.
They entered the tournament because they all had high school experience and enjoy the game, Coblentz said.
"We really didn't get a chance to practice together, but we're a balanced team and I think that our chances are good," she added. "I think that the key will be getting the ball inside to Michelle and Dawn, both 5'11". In three-on-three, I think size is more important than quickness."
"I just want to box out Charles Barkley," Kopec joked.
"I've seen the West Chester team play and they have size and potential. I think that rebounding will be the key, to give them only one shot. With their size, we can't pound the ball inside all night. We'll need rebounds and some jumpers to win," Kopec said.
