After losing what was said to be a must-win game, the men's lacrosse team looks to get back on the winning track tomorrow.
The Lions, coming off a 16-8 defeat to No. 10 Towson State, host Lafayette at 2 tomorrow afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The Lions are 3-3, and defeated the Leopards last year, 11-5.
In the Towson State loss, Coach Glen Thiel noticed the things the team has to work on to compete with the upper-echelon teams.
"We're more worried about ourselves than Lafayette," Thiel said. "We've got to shoot better, and work better on the extra-man offense."
Despite having 40 shots in Wednesday's game, the team only could put eight into the net. As for the extra-man offense, the Lions had eight opportunities but could not capitalize on any of them.
The loss makes tomorrow's game that much more important. The Leopards enter the game with a 1-2 mark after Tuesday's 14-8 loss to Army. Lafayette defeated Holy Cross, 14-4, and loss to Princeton, 18-7. Senior attacker Ken Stiller leads the Leopards in scoring with 11 goals and two assists. He's followed by attacker Jamie Murray with seven goals and two assists. Their top goalie is John Jacob, who has given up 35 goals while making 45 saves.
"They're a veteran team," Thiel said. "They're capable of playing a good game."
"We're pretty confident," senior midfielder Paul Fisher added. "They're a lot like Drexel."
If that is the case the Lions could be in for a cakewalk, as they defeated the Dragons, 16-8. Fisher expects the team to get even more shots than the 40 they had on Wednesday.
Another reason the game is critical is that the team has two tough road tests, at Maryland-Baltimore County and Rutgers, coming up in the next two weekends.
The difference between winning and losing in the last two games has been the second quarter. The team outscored the Dragons 9-3 in the period, while Towson State scored seven goals while holding the Lions to two in the second period.
"We just want to try to get everyone to play well," Thiel said. "We haven't been able to do that yet."
