Letter to the Editor
Rights aren't trivial
When we come across a letter as blatantly misinformed as Rob Polinsky's, ("Support Portland," March 27) we find it necessary to point out a few facts. Mr. Polinsky states that "the LGBSA is ripping a program to pieces." How is this occuring, considering that in all media contact, LGBSA members have stated that we do not have a problem with Portland personally; we disagree with her policy of discrimination? In both demonstrations that have taken place, demonstrators carried signs supporting the Lady Lions basketball team, and not one sign or chant mentioned Portland's name. These can hardly be considered personal attacks, and they certainly aren't ripping an entire athletic program to pieces. As for the argument that if a lesbian athlete "was good enough, she would have been recruited long ago," well, surprise Mr. Polinsky! Ten percent of the Lady Lion basketball team, not to mention any other group, is probably already gay according to the Kinsey Report. But Portland's policy forces these women to hide this integral part of themselves. Finally, we would like to address the issue that these are "trivial allegations." If Portland said she would deny scholarships to African-American women, would those who opposed this policy be accused of making "trivial allegations?" If Jewish women couldn't play on the team, would those who protested be making "trivial allegations?" The LGBSA and its supporters are not fighting against Portland or the Lady Lions. We are fighting the racism, sexism and homophobia from which a policy of discrimination stems. Mr. Polinsky is probably right when he said, "Rene Portland is the best coach in Lady Lions history." But as one LGBSA member put it, "Discrimination sucks."
