Silenced
The St. Thomas More Catholic Association and the Newman Catholic Student Association will co-sponsor a lecture at 7:30 tonight in 112 Kern. The speaker will be Helen Alvare, director of planning and information, Secretariat for Pro-Life Issues of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Ms. Alvare was the center of a recent controversy involving ABC's special program, "Abortion: The New Civil War." In her role as the bishops' spokeswoman, Ms. Alvare was scheduled to appear on the "town meeting" segment of questions and answers. Perhaps because she is neither a stereotypical spokesperson for the conference nor a stereotypical feminist, she was abruptly "disinvited." Ms. Alvare protested the move because it gave Catholic bishops no opportunity to answer questions or defend the church's teachings, but the program aired without her. Ms. Alvare makes it a point to report not only religious truths concering abortion and life issues, but objective scientific evidence as well. This makes her lecture a must for all who are interested in the Catholic Church's position on this important set of issues as well as those who still have an open mind.
