Don't bite

It seems that a disturbing trend is developing in USG elections. Since the fabulous success of the Muir/Williams ticket last year, several tickets have jumped on the Greek bandwagon.

As a Greek who supported Muir and who has a substantial amount of fraternal leadership experience, I have been extremely distressed at the Malveaux/Treiman "Greek Leader" campaign.

I have worked with Courtney on the IFC Community Relations Committee, and I consider him my friend, but he's no Muir.

Muir had a great deal of experience in group leadership. He served as chapter programs chair for the Interfraternity Council, USG supreme court justice and Department of Safety member.

Courtney has served on the IFC Community Relations Committee, and was president of Penn State Students for Life. I can't say that I know Saul, beyond the fact that he was a stealth senator for East Halls, but maybe that says something too.

If Greeks really want someone in touch with their issues, it wouldn't be Courtney. Leslie Osborn, a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, Order of Omega greek leadership fraternity and an Omicron Delta Kappa inductee for USG leadership, is better qualified to interface between the Greek and independent communities.

As someone who has been concerned with the image and activities of Greeks on this campus, I can't say that Greeks here need Courtney's reactionary conservativism.

Greeks at Penn State have a strong record of progressive change. Courtney is concerned with one issue: abortion restriction. For a ticket that claims to want to take the politics out of USG, his angry activism speaks directly to the contrary.

As for the "Greek Leaders" who sponsored the advertisement in the Collegian, I hope they shop around before they try a repeat of last year's rally. Muir was stronger and better qualified. He had an original platform and a well-known running mate.

In conclusion, there is a difference between seeking the support of Greeks and exploiting them. Greek leaders, don't bite. Don't be pandered to. If you want to learn more about the candidates than what comes out in the paper, go to the USG office and read up.
