Tomorrow's non-binding referendums provide chance to express views

Tomorrow students will have an opportunity to raise a ruckus.

It's not often that students have the chance to express their views on everyday issues directly to the Undergraduate Student Government.

But tomorrow the USG elections ballot will also include non-binding referendums on five topics regarding student life at Penn State.

Voting tomorrow will not only allow students to choose which leaders they want representing them to the administration, but it will also provide a forum for expressing student opinion.

And whoever is elected this week should use the results of the referendum to push for change.

The questions on this year's election referendum deal with:

-- Whether or not the University should change the academic calendar to include a Fall Semester break. Currently the University is closed on Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday following Thanksgiving. The fall break would result in a longer semester.

-- Whether or not the University should change its policies to limit punishment for possessing marijuana to no more than one semester of disciplinary probation. Current University policy for disciplining students possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana and for possession of drug paraphernalia is a minimum of one semester of discplinary probation. This penalty can be increased to include additional semesters of probation, suspension or dismissal, subject to the judicial board's interpretation of the circumstances of the offense.

-- Whether or not students are satisfied with the performance of the University's advising system, specifically regarding individual advisers.

-- Whether or not the University adequately prepares teaching assistants for performing their classroom responsibilities.

-- Whether or not the University should charge a mandatory student fee to help fund Ritenour Health Center.

Although the results of this referendum are non-binding, they serve an important tool for USG to represent the student body.

Take the time out tomorrow to let the next USG leaders know what you want them to do for you.
