The women's track team will begin its outdoor season with the Lady Lion Invitational tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Nittany Lion Track.
Assistant coach Jeri Daniels-Elder said that because it is so early in the season, participation in the invitational should be limited. Coach Teri Jordan said bad weather could discourage athletes from competing. Only the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is committed to attend.
The invitational may not be the largest of the season, but Jordan said it is important. The results of this meet should determine who makes the traveling team, she said. The traveling team will compete March 23 at the Raleigh Relays at N.C. State.
"Many times our strongest performances occur when competing against ourselves," Jordan said.
Because the discus, javelin and hammer throws are exclusively outdoor events, the invitational is the first meet for many of the throwers. The throwers -- who have been training since September -- are anxious to begin their season, Daniels-Elder said. Each weekend is a chance for the throwers to qualify for championships, she added.
The Lady Lions have spent the last two weeks preparing for the outdoor season. Runner Amy Kopf said they had started to step up their anaerobic training to work on speed.
"We're still trying to evaluate individual's performances. We use this first home meet as a guage to measure the athletes," Daniels-Elder said.
The Nittany Lion Track is located off Porter Road near Beaver Stadium.
