Helping women

As a woman student, I am closely watching the USG elections to see how they are going to affect me. With this in mind, I am going to vote for Mark Stewart and Merryl Werber, the ticket that will have an impact on issues that concern me.

Mark and Merryl are the only candidates that have recognized the pervasiveness of eating disorders on this campus and have proposed an eating disorders clinic to combat it. About 30 percent of college-age women have bulimic tendencies and Stewart/Werber are responding to this problem.

They have proposed that the campus offer options counseling to give women all sides of the issue and allow them to make their own decisions. This is a service for students who want to know the facts without having to leave campus or be faced with strong advocates of any option.

Mark and Merryl have also proposed that criminal evidence exams be offered at Ritenour and another physician qualified to administer them be hired. They are, once again, the only candidates to address this issue. They realize many women do not pursue criminal charges when they have been raped, and a reason in some cases is the intimidation and inconvenience of a trip to Centre County Community Hospital. Their proposal eliminates this problem.

The Stewart/Werber ticket has proposed a mandatory freshman sexual assault awareness program. This would alert freshmen of the problem of sexual assault. Mark and Merryl have shown that they will work hard to fight sexual assault on this campus.

Another objective of the ticket is extending the Town Loop to the fraternity district for the safety of women and men returning from fraternity functions at night.

All of the above are tangible goals. Stewart/Werber is looking to respond to the needs of women on this campus. They have made it a major part of their campaign and will strive to create a better environment for the 51 percent minority. I urge all women who would like to see some changes and an administration responsive to their needs to vote Stewart/Werber and allow them to create an impact that will be felt by all.
