The Undergraduate Student Government Senate voted to support four bills proposed by the state legislature to reform current state voter registration laws.
Submitted by Senate President Kurt J. Derr, the resolutions call for USG endorsement of the bills by letter.
The proposed bills include giving voter registration forms to graduating high school seniors with their diplomas, allowing for same-day registration, sending registration forms with driver's license re-applications, and sending out absentee ballots to those who have already voted in this fashion, Derr said.
Student voter registration and turnout has been "dismally low," Derr said, adding that passing the bills can help increase overall student participation.
"These bills will be good for college students, because hopefully they will cause electoral participation to increase," Derr said.
Two motions passed unanimously, and the other two passed by a considerable majority.
The bill that includes sending voter registration forms with driver's license re-application forms sparked slight concern about its effectiveness.
"A lot of students register but just don't vote," said town senator Michelle Keasey. "Quite possibly, they'd just throw it out."
But town senator Tracey Maulfair said the bills could be helpful.
"I just renewed my license and if I'd gotten a form with it, I would have thought about it, not just thrown it out right away," Maulfair said.
