Roger Czulewicz (junior-political science) and Janine Solomone (junior-psychology) intend to let students make some of their decisions.
The Undergraduate Student Government does not communicate effectively with students, presidential candidate Czulewicz said.
He suggested USG conduct regular "phone-a-thons" to solicit student opinion on issues. Czulewicz also suggested that USG create committees in town and on campus to listen for student concerns, Czulewicz said.
Czulewicz said USG should not concentrate on helping special interest groups more than the majority of students. He said that most students are not heard, and that the needs of the average student, such as improved health care and adequate parking, are being ignored.
Health care improvements at Ritenour could include increasing the staff by allowing Hershey Medical Center students to work at Ritenour, Czulewicz said.
He also said the University should build larger parking garages so students do not have to move their cars. Solomone said walking routes to some campus lots are unsafe and the University must install more lighting.
To improve academics, senior undergraduate students could volunteer as supplementary advisers to help freshman schedule their classes, Czulewicz said. USG could also study the possibility for University funding of undergraduate research, he said.
Czulewicz said he does not support adding the words "sexual orientation" to the University's non-discrimination policy because it may force ROTC off campus. Solomone said the clause could bring lawsuits against the University because federal law excludes gay men and lesbians from ROTC.
Czulewicz and Solomone said they would approach the administration with a positive attitude, working to establish mutual respect.
"The administration needs to know that students care," Czulewicz said.
Czulewicz said he would work for a partially open budget. Solomone stressed that the administration should reveal how Campaign for Penn State funds are being used.
Czulewicz is the head coach for the Penn State Debate team, an officer of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, 329 E. Prospect Ave., and on the Fraternity Purchasing Association Board of Directors. Solomone is executive vice president of the East Residence Halls Association, an officer of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, 3 Stone, and a member of the Student Hearing Board.
