Malveaux, Treiman: Cut USG petty politics
Funding of special interest group services should be eliminated

Collegian Staff Writer

Courtney Malveaux (senior-sociology) and Saul Treiman (junior-accounting) will focus on eliminating what they call petty politics within the Undergraduate Student Government if elected, Malveaux said.

USG takes too many political stances, Malveaux said. He cited USG's sponsorship of National Organization of Women President Molly Yard last September as an example.

"Special interest groups should handle that," Malveaux said.

He said money like the $200 USG allocated to fund Yard's reception would be better spent funding student services, such as more self-defense classes for women.

Malveaux and Treiman also said they would ask the Department of Women's Concerns to investigate why so few women participate in majors like engineering.

Malveaux said initiating a campus version of the Interfraternity Council's Crimewatch system would increase campus safety. Volunteers would monitor areas to report potential problems of noise, fighting or drinking to authorities, he said.

Students should respond to state funding cuts, Malveaux said. He said he would designate a day this semester when professors would be asked to give students 10 minutes of class time to write Gov. Robert P. Casey and state legislators for state funding. USG would then mail the letters in bulk.

Malveaux and Treiman also want randomly chosen students to proxy for them on the Undergraduate Student Advisory Board to provide students with access to administrators.

Malveaux said he does not support adding the words "sexual orientation" to the University's non-discrimination clause. But if such a clause is added, Malveaux said he will work to keep ROTC on campus and ensure that the University honors ROTC scholarships. The U.S. Department of Defense excludes gay men and lesbians from military service.

Malveaux said he wants USG, the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils, and the Association of Residence Hall Students to co-sponsor events like dances to improve relations between Greek and independent students.

Treiman said setting up a Department of Academic Affairs in addition to USG Academic Assembly could better address students' academic concerns.

Malveaux is a member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, 321 Fraternity Row. He has been on the IFC Community Relations Committee, the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon Morale Committee and a member of American Collegians for Life. Treiman is a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, 508 Locust Lane. He directed creation of the USG course selector guide, served as a USG senator and worked on the IFC Rush Promotional Committee.
