Colgate's Sherri Krasnoo led the nation in scoring last year. She's scored 19 goals so far this year.
But women's lacrosse coach Julie Williams doesn't plan to change her defense for Krasnoo when the Lady Lions host Colgate at 4 this afternoon on the artificial turf field next to Holuba Hall.
Both teams are currently 3-0.
"One kid can't beat you," Williams said. "So why ruin your consistency for just one kid?"
"Julie doesn't try to emphasize it too much, and that's good because sometimes it can intimidate us," defender Elena Brazer said.
Brazer said last year against Maryland the team focused on stopping one scorer, and she thinks that may be one reason the Lady Lions lost.
"The rest of the team pulled together and won," she said.
Williams did work with the defense yesterday so it won't make the same mistakes it made in Tuesday's 8-5 victory over Loyola. The Lady Lions gave up four unassisted goals in the first half partly because of sloppy stick checking. Every time a defender attempts a check she drops a step behind, and the Lady Lions fell too far behind Tuesday.
"I tell them, 'Do not check unless she gives you a gift,' " Williams said. "It's a gift, not something you do. We got a little greedy yesterday.
"They won't be able to stick check in practice. They'll just run."
Williams will make sure the defense is aware of Krasnoo's presence, however.
"They should know that if Elena Brazer is on Krasnoo that she might need a little extra help," she said.
Reining in the defensive players, who want to create turnovers and get the ball, isn't easy, but Williams said the defense usually is patient.
Williams said Colgate's style of play is similar to Loyola's -- both teams try to create one-on-one situations on offense. She wants the defense to play more calmly and efficiently.
"That's what we did the second half (against Loyola); we only took the good check, and held them to only one goal," Brazer said.
Today's game will not be played on Lady Lion Field because weather has not permitted the team to practice there. Williams believes the Lady Lions will have more of a home-field advantage on the turf field, where they have been practicing.
Lady Lion Field was in good enough condition to practice on yesterday, but Williams didn't think one practice was enough to acclimate the team to grass.
Last year Penn State defeated Colgate on the road, 13-6, behind five goals by Megan Smith.
